The highly anticipated fireworks display that rings in every new year in downtown Singapore has been canceled this year and will instead take place on a smaller scale around the city to minimize crowds.
Organizers of the Marina Bay Countdown today announced that, instead of events across the Civil District and Marina Bay area culminating in a large-scale pyrotechnic show at the stroke of midnight, Singaporeans can look for fireworks from their homes as well as light displays at four locations.
“This year, the Marina Bay Singapore Countdown 2021 will take on a different format to bring us together to reflect on 2020 and welcome our hopes and aspirations for the coming year,” it announced. “As safety remains a priority in view of the COVID-19 pandemic, there will be no fireworks display at Marina Bay on [New Year’s Eve] to minimize crowds from gathering in the precinct.”
Organizers are still working out the details of its neighborhood fireworks and plan to release more information. A New Year’s Eve concert will also be streamed online and broadcast on national television.
Four light shows are planned at The Promontory open space beside Marina Bay Sands, The Fullerton Hotel, the Merlion, and the ArtScience Museum.
The “Shine A Light” display will project 60 light beams from The Promontory every night throughout December while the “Share the Moment” projection of student artwork will illuminate the landmarks every night from Dec. 25 to 31. The ArtScience Museum will light up Dec. 26.

The Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS) plans to discontinue the issuance of the $1,000 note beginning 1 January 2021. In a press release, MAS said that this is a pre-emptive measure to mitigate the higher money laundering and terrorism financing (ML/TF) risks associated with large denomination notes. Until December 2020, only a limited quantity of $1,000 notes…
